It is the first scooter of its kind in the world and Amigo is pround to have developed this mobility product in conjunction with Zomet Institute. Halachically approved, the Amigo Shabbat may be used throughout the observance of the Sabbath.
How does the Shabbat work?
When the Amigo is put into the Shabbat mode, it connects to a seperate circuit board - the Shabbat module. The Shabbat module's timing circuit takes about 7-11 seconds to start the Amigo moving slowly on its own. There is no throttle lever activation required by the driver. This is considered an "indirect action".
Once the Amigo is moving in Shabbat mode, the driver may pull the lever to go forward faster because the motor relay circuit has already been activated by the Shabbat module. This is NOT considered a "direct action". To go in reverse, the driver must push a directional rocker switch causing the Shabbat to go through its timing, again, before it automatically changes the motor relay for reverse driving. (Refer to your owner's manual for mor information.)
We hope the Amigo Shabbat provides you with safe and confident mobility for many years.
Welcome to our Amigo family!

Al Thieme (pronounced tee-mee) was a young man working as a plumbing and heating contractor in Bridgeport, Mich. when a family member began to lose her mobility due to multiple sclerosis. Witnessing this loss of independence, he worked in the evenings, after his day job, to create an innovative form of mobility. Thieme went on to invent the first ever power operated vehicle/scooter â the Amigo.
Named for being the âfriendly wheelchair,â Thieme met with many organizations, such as the MS Society, to explain the Amigoâs benefits and functionality. Consequently, Amigo Mobility International, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1968 and an entire industry was born.
Today, the headquarters occupies nearly 52,000 square feet of space, including a 2008 addition of 22,000 square feet to the assembly and warehouse areas. As Amigo Mobilityâs chairman and founder, Al continues to be actively involved in the company daily. Hands-on and focused, he is passionate about Improving Lives Through Mobility®.
